Extensive fire experiments have shown that ISO-straw tends to be less vulnerable to fire than similar organic or petrochemical products: The high mineral and silica content of wheat straw, which is used by ISO-straw, makes it hard for the fire to burn through the material. It also creates a protective coal layer, which is very effective in insulating the straw beneath it from the heat of the fire, which in turn protects the structure of the building. Straw also only embers for a short time, which means that the remaining blazes are easy to quench.
No. straw is, due to the high amount of minerals and silica, very hard to digest which means that it gives no livelihood for most life on earth. The only exceptions are guinea pigs, horses, and cows. Due to the high density of ISO-straw it becomes impossible for potential housemates to dig burrows in it-they prefer polystyrene or other materials that are easier to get through.
Every organic material can start to get affected by mould. Mould is a powerful and successful form of life and a real cosmopolitan. And exactly that is what wheat straw is protected against by nature: It has materials like minerals, silicate and pectin in it´s straw structure and is therefore harder to penetrate by fungi spores. Still, it has to be ensured that no high and constant humidity is present, but that´s he case for any kind of insulation. ISO-straw has the ability to guide humidity through it´s capillaries (where water would previously flow through the straw) to more dry areas. That's how the humidity is given back to the room, which leads to a nice climate inside both in winter and summer.
Right now ISO-straw is only produced in lower Austria, but we are currently planning for plants in several other European countries. On an international level we are leading conversations with potential partners from Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, Scotland, Italy, the USA and Russia. The investment volume for ISO-straw is in the lower 5 digit area, which means that it already starts to be interesting for middle sized companies.
On our partner website you can find partners in your region. Regionality, connected thinking and working are the fundamentals of our companies philosophy.
Our straw is being blown into the building by certified companies with a normal blow-in machine. The ETA approval is necessary, as the building material needs this approval in case of liability issues.
ISO-straw is approved for ceilings, outer walls and roofs. In Austria it is approved for the building of walls up to the building class 5. We would be happy to work on solutions with your designers and can already take ideas from a big pool of previous solutions.
ISO-straw doesn´t have any additives- therefore it can simply get sucked out again and used for something different. It would even be possible to sell it to another construction site. ISO-straw doesn´t decompose and stays stable for hundreds of years.
